Presented by Commanders Smart Wear at FISP in Brazil, this PPE illustrates the possibilities of integrating lighting directly into protective garments.
Together, we explored the best way to integrate our light strips directly into the garment, taking into account its design, the user's movements and the practical constraints of its intended use. The light strips follow the contours of the garment while preserving the flexibility of the textile.
But what can lighting actually bring to PPE? And, more importantly, what possibilities does it offer depending on the intended application?
At Eweave, our Lighting range is divided into three categories: BRIGHT, VISIBILITY and DESIGN.
BRIGHT: Illuminate
The BRIGHT range is dedicated to functional, high-intensity lighting (up to 2,000 lm/m, delivering a level of illumination comparable to that of operating theatre lighting).
In PPE applications, it can be used to directly illuminate a work area, particularly in poorly lit environments or when users need to keep their hands free. For example, a light strip could be integrated into the chest, arm or another part of the garment, depending on the task at hand.
VISIBILITY: Be seen
With VISIBILITY, light is primarily used to signal, guide or improve visibility (with light visible from up to 1,000 metres in dark environments).
In PPE, it can help indicate the presence of a worker in a dark area, increase their visibility to others or highlight specific parts of the garment. Light thus becomes a signalling function integrated directly into the equipment.
DESIGN: Personalise
Finally, DESIGN uses light to personalise and enhance a product. In PPE, this can be used to create a distinctive visual identity, highlight specific areas of the garment or differentiate one piece of equipment from another.
...And lighting is just one of the possibilities !
Textiles can also incorporate other smart functions depending on the requirements of the PPE: detecting mechanical strain on a harness, monitoring certain physiological parameters of the wearer, detecting a fall or an unusual event, transmitting information directly through the textile…
These possibilities can draw on other technologies developed by Eweave, including sensing, data transmission, conductivity, heating and, of course, lighting.
